01/25/2020: Conference “Tracks for a history of Vers-Pont-du-Gard” by Joëlle TARDIEU.

More than eighty people captivated by the different avenues proposed by Joëlle Tardieu

At the Maison de la pierre, Vers-Pont-du-Gard, 3 p.m., Joëlle Tardieu archaeologist (associate researcher, ArAr Lyon laboratory, UMR 5138 of the CNRS)

CBears and Gardens of Arts invites you to discover a revisited history of the village of Vers based on available publications and the analysis of archaeological sites, monuments and preserved works of art which are all avenues for approaching this history and for continuing this archaeologist's perspective...
Water, agriculture, vines, and stone are the common threads for this transchronological presentation: Paleolithic stations, ancient land registers of an agricultural territory marked for centuries by the route of the Nîmes aqueduct and its famous Pont du Gard; vestiges of late Antiquity and the Merovingian and Carolingian periods; on the Christianized site of Saint-Pierre, the veneration of emblematic regional saints very early on brought together a habitat around a church that seems to have continued without hiatus until the Middle Ages. It was not until the 14th century that the population withdrew behind the ramparts of a priory town perched on a rocky hillock and away from the castle sites of La Rochelle and Saint-Privat.
The old castle of Saint-Privat developed in the modern and contemporary eras, housing a succession of prestigious owners (Jules-Marie-Henri de Faret de Fournès, the playwright Thomas Calderón, Jacques Rouché and the Fenwick family) who left their mark on their eras in different ways. Finally, this historical fresco, the themes of which would need to be explored in more depth, will end with the evocation of the "Pierre de Vers": its extraction since ancient times, its decline and its revival under the chisel of the sculptor Armand Pellier, a companion of the Devoir and then a renowned architect whose signature would be the veneer in crust of "Pierre de Vers": he left a few houses in Vers, prototypes of his project of "economic and family housing" and prestigious constructions that have left their mark on contemporary architecture.
The conference will be followed by a friendly drink to share together, to exchange and get to know each other better.

The Christmas market on 12/14/2019 in the heart of the village of Vers-Pont-du-Gard:

This year, we invited the reception center for disadvantaged children from Wamde from Ouagadougou, in Burkina Faso. Founded in 1988 by Mama KOUYATE, it brings together nearly 70 children aged 3 to 18 and offers them:
- a place for living, meeting and sharing: the Wamdé artistic village;
- access to education, schooling and learning a trade;
- training in the transmission of African tradition: music, dance, mime and theater. This knowledge is exported to other European and African children.
All sales made at this stand go entirely to the reception center.

While tasting our mulled wine (sold for the benefit of our association, Arts Courses and Gardens), you will be able to do your last Christmas shopping and meet Mama KOUYATE.
